How the gold rate is set in Pakistan
The All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association announces the official rate once a day, usually in the afternoon. It is based on three things:
- International gold price: the global rate in US dollars per ounce. When it rises or falls, the local rate usually follows.
- Rupee-dollar rate: a weaker rupee makes gold more expensive in Pakistan, even if the global price stays the same.
- Local demand: buying during the wedding season or times of uncertainty can push local prices up.
The rates above are for pure gold and silver. Jewellers add making charges (mazdoori) for jewellery, and these vary by design and shop. That is why the price you pay in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad or Peshawar can be different from the Sarafa rate.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in one tola?
One tola is about 11.66 grams. This is why the 10 gram rate is lower than the per tola rate.
When is the gold rate updated?
The Sarafa association usually announces new rates in the afternoon, Monday to Saturday. We update this page with the latest official figures.
Why is the jeweller’s price higher than the rate here?
Jewellers add making charges and sometimes their own margin. For ready-made jewellery, the final price also depends on the purity (24K, 22K or 21K) and the weight of stones or other material.
